We are looking for an experienced Workplace Architect (File Share to SharePoint migration) to provide overall technical leadership for a large-scale File Share to SharePoint Online and Azure bulk migration program.

The migration is based on an existing high-level concept that requires further validation, optimization, and execution. The successful candidate will shape the migration strategy, validate the target architecture, prepare the migration roadmap, set up migration tooling, and lead pilot migrations before the program moves into full-scale production waves.

The role focuses on ensuring a scalable target architecture, a low-risk migration approach, and a successful transition into production migration waves.

Migration scope

  • Approximately 261 TB of data
  • Approximately 155 million files
  • Approximately 20 million folders
  • 66 file shares containing more than 1 TB of data each
  • Approximately 171 TB of data across these large file shares

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, challenge, and optimize the existing SharePoint Online target architecture, information structure, governance model, and migration strategy.
  • Validate overall migration readiness and define the migration roadmap and wave-based migration approach.
  • Analyze complex migration scenarios and technical blockers, including:
    • Long file paths
    • Unsupported characters
    • Very large file volumes
    • Permission inheritance and access-control challenges
    • Excel files containing macros
    • Unsupported or problematic content
    • Other file share migration limitations
  • Define data remediation, exception handling, and migration standards for problematic content.
  • Guide and mentor the SharePoint SME in the setup, configuration, and optimization of migration tooling, including Quest, ShareGate, and supporting utilities.
  • Design pilot migration scenarios, including:
    • Success criteria
    • Test procedures
    • Validation approach
    • Rollback plans
    • Cutover activities
  • Lead up to two pilot migrations, analyze results, and optimize the migration architecture, tooling configuration, and processes based on lessons learned.
  • Provide technical governance and leadership during the initial production migration waves.
  • Ensure migration activities meet required quality, security, governance, and compliance standards.
  • Identify and manage technical risks, dependencies, and migration-related issues.
  • Facilitate technical workshops and communicate migration decisions and risks to key stakeholders.
  • Support strategic decisions related to:
    • Target platforms
    • Archiving strategies
    • Content consolidation
    • Data remediation
    • Migration prioritization
  • Establish and maintain migration standards, best practices, and technical documentation throughout the program.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online architecture.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with large-scale File Share to SharePoint Online migrations.
