The Role
Capella Space, now part of IonQ's space business, operates a commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation delivering all-weather, day-and-night imagery to customers globally. The Flight Software team develops and maintains the software that keeps the constellation operational and supports the development of a quantum-secured space network.
As a Flight Software Engineer, you will write software that runs the satellite fleet in orbit, collaborating closely with FPGA developers, electrical engineers, and subsystem owners to design, build, and evolve flight code.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain flight software for a growing satellite constellation.
- Collaborate with EE, FPGA, and ground software engineers to ensure seamless integration between hardware and software.
- Lead code reviews and mentor teammates with constructive feedback.
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests to ensure software robustness and reliability.
- Develop software documentation and provide cross-training to team members.
- Troubleshoot and resolve software issues, including live on-orbit operations.
- Participate in the software development lifecycle from requirement analysis to deployment.
- Support integration and operations teams with software-related issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Ability to support a design through all software lifecycles including architecture, implementation, integration, and testing.
- Experience with real-time embedded systems, including hardware, software, and low-level drivers.
- Hands-on experience developing, testing, and debugging hard real-time software (bare-metal or RTOS).
- Familiarity with embedded Linux, Linux kernel modules, and standard Linux tools.
- Strong knowledge of compiled languages such as C and C++, and scripting languages such as Python and shell scripting.
- Experience writing software for microcontrollers and embedded systems such as Xilinx Zynq SoCs.
- Familiarity with software configuration management.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment and electronics hardware such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
