Job Description
The Impact Safety Test Engineer is responsible for the planning, preparing and performing impact safety-related testing and ensuring successful completion of full-size vehicle, component and/or occupant sled testing.
This role requires knowledge in domestic and global regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviewing impact test regulations and test requests provided by requestors
- Providing work instructions to technicians, mechanics and photographers
- Performing tests to regulations and post test data validations
- Ensuring test data collection systems are properly configured and capturing required data
- Interfacing with equipment suppliers and internal departments to coordinate calibrations and repairs
- Keeping up with current software and hardware best practices
- Performing onsite physical preparation and testing with vehicles and test-related hardware and software
- Development and implementation of new test methods and equipment
- Managing improvements to department processes
- Supporting 1st and/or 2nd shift operations, including weekends and holidays as required
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited University
- 1-5 years of automotive experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and MS Teams
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to manage continuous improvement initiatives and engineering projects with minimal supervision
- Effective operation of precise data acquisition equipment and software, or ability to master these systems quickly
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Hypergraph Analytical Software, Canalizer, Math-lab software and Omega Temp loggers
- 3-5 years of experience in automotive test facilities and impact testing
- Knowledge of logistics planning, warehouse management, or material handling
- Basic knowledge of LEAN principles and process improvement practices
- Basic knowledge of standard problem solving techniques such as 8D, fishbone analysis, and 5-Why
- Basic knowledge of automotive restraint systems and interior trim assembly
- Exposure to working with or supervising a unionized workforce
- Familiarity with global test regulations including NHTSA, FMVSS, EuroNCAP, and IIHS
- Masters in Electrical Engineering
