Our team combines cutting-edge technology with a deep commitment to safety and innovation to solve real operational and design challenges facing our communities' transportation systems.

Who You Are

Precision Systems, Inc. is seeking a senior Highway/Roadway Design Engineer to join PSI full-time and lead roadway design and PS&E delivery for transportation infrastructure projects. This position will serve as a senior technical lead for highway, roadway, multimodal, corridor reconstruction, and task-order design assignments, with responsibility for advancing projects from planning and concept development through final PS&E and construction support.

The successful candidate will strengthen in-house roadway design capacity and support federal, state, and local transportation clients, including DDOT, VDOT, MDOT SHA, FHWA, and other public agencies. This role requires a hands-on design leader who can manage roadway geometry, civil/site design, multimodal facilities, drainage coordination, utility coordination, traffic and safety interfaces, ADA compliance, MOT considerations, quality control, and interdisciplinary PS&E integration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead roadway/highway design for corridor reconstruction, safety, multimodal, bridge-adjacent, trail, streetscape, and transportation infrastructure projects
  • Prepare and oversee PS&E packages, including plans, specifications, estimates, quantities, design reports, and supporting technical documentation
  • Develop roadway geometry, horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, cross sections, grading, curb ramp layouts, ADA improvements, multimodal facilities, maintenance of traffic concepts, and constructible design details
  • Coordinate roadway design with drainage, stormwater management, traffic signals, lighting, signing and pavement marking, utilities, survey/SUE, geotechnical, structural, environmental, and landscape architecture disciplines
  • Lead concept-to-final design progression, including 30%, 60%, 90%, and final PS&E submissions
  • Support task order kickoff, scope confirmation, field reviews, design criteria development, schedule planning, and technical approach development
  • Identify design risks early, including utility conflicts, field constraints, drainage impacts, ROW/access limitations, constructability issues, ADA compliance concerns, and stakeholder-driven design changes
  • Provide technical direction to roadway engineers, designers, and CADD staff
  • Perform senior technical review and QA/QC of roadway plans, calculations, details, quantities, and design documentation
  • Support client coordination, agency reviews, comment resolution, and interdisciplinary design meetings
  • Develop constructible, standards-compliant roadway solutions in constrained urban, parkway, Federal Lands, and environmentally sensitive settings
  • Support proposal development, project interviews, staff resumes, project descriptions, and technical approach narratives for roadway/highway opportunities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 8+ years of progressive roadway/highway design experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading roadway or highway PS&E packages from concept through final design
  • Strong knowledge of AASHTO, FHWA, MUTCD, ADA/PROWAG, and state/local transportation design standards
  • Experience delivering roadway design for public-sector transportation clients such as FHWA, DDOT, VDOT, MDOT SHA, NPS, or comparable agencies
  • Experience coordinating roadway design with drainage, SWM, traffic, utilities, geotechnical, structural, environmental, and survey disciplines
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent assignments, task orders, or on-call/IDIQ projects
  • Strong understanding of constructability, design staging, MOT considerations, and interdisciplinary plan integration
  • Ability to lead technical staff, communicate with clients, resolve comments, and maintain schedule and quality across active assignments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with bridge-adjacent roadway design, parkways, trails, access roads, or constrained settings
  • Experience producing PS&E packages compliant with FHWA, AASHTO, DDOT, VDOT, MDOT SHA, or NPS requirements
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, AutoTURN, Synchro, or related transportation design and analysis tools
  • Experience serving as Highway Design Lead, Roadway Design Lead, Civil Lead, Engineer of Record, or task-order manager on multidisciplinary transportation projects
  • Experience mentoring junior roadway engineers and designers
  • Experience supporting small-business prime contracts, IDIQs, MATOCs, or on-call transportation programs

Ideal Candidate Profile
