Description

The Patient Care Technician assists and supports the Professional Registered Nurse in direct and indirect patient care activities within the unit. Responsibilities include monitoring and recording patient vitals, performing clinical tasks such as EKG, glucose checks, phlebotomy, specimen collection, newborn hearing screening, and supporting newborn care. The role also covers safety/emergency response, basic life support initiation when needed, and appropriate documentation and charge activities.

Responsibilities

• Direct patient care: assist with admission/transfer/discharge; take and record vital signs (including for adults/neonates) and weights/heights; track intake/output; apply cardiac monitoring/oximetry; obtain EKG; capillary blood glucose checks; perform phlebotomy; collect specimens (urine/stool/blood/sputum); newborn care and hearing screening; fetal monitoring application; discontinue heplocks and Foley catheters; administer enemas; provide morning/evening care (baths/peri-care); make beds; ambulate patients; assist with pre- and post-operative care; apply comfort and safety measures; set up oxygen and suction; apply dressings to Stage I/II skin breakdown; prepare rooms for MD/RN assessments and procedures; transport patients/equipment in urgent situations; respond to emergencies and initiate basic life support when required; perform post-mortem care; manage care for prosthetic/hearing/dental/vision items.
• Indirect patient care: maintain safe/clean environment (e.g., cleaning/temperature logs for refrigerators, linen and equipment handling, SPD equipment return); perform RN-delegated tasks; collect and inventory patient belongings; complete charges with documentation; order and stock supplies; assure room readiness and equipment readiness; count instruments/sterile trays as appropriate; participate in meetings and onboarding; support quality improvement and QC activities; use communication channels to resolve issues.

Requirements

• CNA certification or currently enrolled in School of Nursing with successfully completed basic clinical rotations
• CPR recognition by American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers)
• Minimum 90% on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes
• Unit-based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring
• High school diploma (required)
• One year of college or nursing education or equivalent experience (preferred)
• Previous healthcare setting experience with ability to relate to patients and staff (preferred)
