SoC Firmware Engineering Internship

Intern • On-site

110,000 - 110,000 USD/yr

Austin, TX

Quick Facts

  • Internship: SoC Firmware Engineering (Winter/Spring 2027)

  • Start/Duration: January 2027 through Spring term (approximately May 2027), with potential extension into Summer 2027

  • Commitment: Minimum 12 weeks, full-time (40 hours/week), on-site

Description

Join the firmware team working on custom SoCs for Training and inference. You will write and debug C firmware for RTOS and bare-metal environments, bring up software on pre-silicon platforms (FPGA/emulation) and real target hardware, and help verify that new SoCs are functional, performant, and reliable.

Responsibilities

  • Write and debug C firmware for RTOS and bare-metal; participate in code reviews

  • Bring up and test firmware on FPGA/emulation and target boards in the lab

  • Write or extend low-level drivers for SPI, I2C, and UART; learn bring-up for PCIe, DDR, CAN, and Ethernet

  • Find root causes of hardware-level bugs using JTAG debuggers, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes

  • Build host tools for code generation, test automation, and log analysis; improve the build system

  • Add unit tests and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests

  • Document design, results, and open risks

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • Return to school after the internship (expected graduation between December 2027 and May 2028)

  • Minimum 12 weeks, full-time (40 hours/week), on-site

  • Proficiency in C, including pointers, memory layout, and bit manipulation

  • Microprocessor fundamentals: interrupts, registers, memory maps

  • Comfort with Linux, git, and the command line

  • Methodical debugging approach: hypothesis-driven testing and validation

  • Ability to clearly explain technical ideas to engineers in other disciplines

Benefits

  • Mentor support while owning a defined firmware project with hands-on debugging and hardware bring-up
