Site Reliability Engineer

A taste of what you’ll do

The Site Reliability Engineer will be responsible for technical design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, and recovery procedures for mission-critical systems. The role includes troubleshooting hardware, software, and networking issues and ensuring computing operations deliver optimal performance and security.

  • Ensure high availability and acceptable performance levels for mission-critical infrastructure resources.
  • Continuously analyse production system performance and stability, proactively identifying optimisation opportunities.
  • Respond to support escalations.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorised use.
  • Develop procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
  • Develop and maintain system monitoring and alerting to maximise uptime and minimise end-user impact.
  • Own and resolve escalated service issues.
  • Provide technical services and support for internal systems, cloud, and network infrastructure.
  • Support virtualisation technologies, including VMware, Proxmox, Microsoft, and LXC.
  • Perform remote monitoring and management of system alerts and notifications.
  • Administer and maintain the remote monitoring and management system, including updating agent scripts, responding to alerts, monitoring dashboards, and conducting periodic system audits and reviews.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews.
  • Carry out other tasks related to the Site Reliability Engineer and DevOps Engineer role.

Who and what we are after

  • Proven experience as a Site Reliability Engineer, DevOps Engineer, System Administrator, or in a similar role for at least 3 years.
  • Working knowledge of cloud environments and related technologies, such as AWS and Oracle.
  • Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, proxies, LAN/WAN networks, and patch-management tools.
  • Proficiency with log management and visualisation using the ELK Stack.
  • Proficiency with monitoring solutions including Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Proficiency with Git and CI/CD pipelines in GitLab.
  • Proficiency with configuration management tools such as Terraform.
  • Proficiency with containerisation and orchestration, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Working knowledge of server operating systems, particularly Linux and Windows.
  • Good knowledge of network protocols, including HTTP and TCP stacks.
  • Knowledge of system security, such as intrusion detection systems, and data backup and recovery.
  • Ability to script and automate processes using tools such as Rundeck, Ansible, Bash, and Puppet.
  • Experience with Nginx, PHP-FPM, SSL, DNS, and Cloudflare is a plus.
  • Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline; professional certifications are a plus.
  • Excellent critical-thinking, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Organised, patient, and professional demeanour with a can-do attitude.
  • Availability outside working hours to resolve emergency issues promptly.
