About the role

As a Test Automation Architect, you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of automated testing frameworks that underpin the scripting of automated tests. You will support QA Engineers in developing complex automation scenarios and debugging challenging automation issues. The role also involves researching industry best practices, tools, and emerging trends and applying them within the team. As the technical lead for operational automation teams onshore and offshore, you will maintain oversight of automation progress and report on it to the respective project managers.

How you will get the job done

  • Participate in the project initiation phase BIC to assess the potential, costs, and effort for test automation.
  • Support Test Managers and QA Engineers in selecting tools and defining a cohesive test automation strategy aligned with business goals and system architecture, with a focus on Python-based solutions.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, flexible test automation frameworks compliant with current market standards, primarily Playwright.
  • Mentor and support QA Engineers in complex scripting scenarios and code-error debugging, while elevating their competencies.
  • Analyze and implement industry best practices, tools, and methodologies, including Shift-Left Testing, BDD/TDD, and CI/CD integration.
  • Collaborate with developers and software architects to ensure applications are testable at code and architectural levels.
  • Collaborate with local and global test architects to ensure unified, consistent automation practices.
  • Define and implement test-automation KPIs in line with internal standards.
  • Supervise test-metric measurement and provide reports with strategic insight into product quality.
  • Develop and support existing automation frameworks using Playwright and tools such as Cypress and Selenium.
  • Provide project consultancy on test automation and verify that manual tests are ready for automation.
  • Provide strategic guidance on test automation for native and hybrid mobile applications and cross-platform web solutions.

Skills and experience you will need

  • Fluency in English.
  • Higher education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Automation and Robotics, Mathematics, or another STEM discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience implementing test automation frameworks, tools, and practices.
  • At least 5 years of experience debugging automation code and solving complex technical problems.
  • Professional QA Engineer experience in web testing, including browser developer tools, Postman or Swagger, Mitm proxy, Lighthouse, and similar tools.
  • Extensive, experience-backed participation in the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and defining regression-test scope for medium and large-scale projects.
  • Practical experience with test automation frameworks and tools, especially Playwright, as well as Robot Framework, Cypress, Selenium, or Appium.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Deep knowledge of software and system architecture, including monoliths, microservices, web applications, and mobile applications.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, such as SAFe, and distributed teams.
  • ISTQB Foundation Level, ISTQB Advanced Test Automation Engineer, or other additional certifications, for example in CI/CD, cloud computing, or Agile methodologies.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with any CMS.
  • German language proficiency.
