About the job

Software Engineering Managers provide technical leadership for major projects while managing teams of engineers. They manage project goals, contribute to product strategy, develop their teams, and guide engineering work across areas including artificial intelligence, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, and user-interface design.

With technical and leadership expertise, you will manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, oversee a large product budget, and lead deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

The Geo team is building and scaling a 3D Immersive Navigation Experience. As an Engineering Manager, you will use extensive machine learning and computer vision experience to lead the design and development of detailed 3D navigation maps. The work uses sensor data—including imagery, vehicle telemetry, location data, and authoritative data—along with large ML models and AI techniques to create structured geospatial data and user experiences for more than 2 billion users globally.

The team builds accurate, comprehensive, and useful maps through products including Maps, Earth, Street View, and mapping platforms. The work includes solving complex computer science problems, designing intuitive product experiences, and improving understanding of the real world.

Responsibilities

  • Take end-to-end ownership of converting complex imagery, location, and sensor data into precise geometries for next-generation navigation products.
  • Translate ambiguous input-data challenges into clear algorithmic, ML, and GenAI formulations; collaborate with product, UX, and engineering to define visual experiences and iterate toward scalable solutions.
  • Set and communicate team priorities that support broader organizational goals; align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Set clear expectations for individuals based on their level and role; meet regularly to discuss performance, development, feedback, and coaching.
  • Develop the long-term technical outlook and roadmap, addressing anticipated requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Design, guide, and review system designs; write product or system-development code to solve ambiguous problems; conduct code reviews and provide best-practice feedback.
