The Role
We are looking for a deeply hands-on Senior Staff Distributed Systems Engineer to join the team building IonQ's Network and Security Platform. You will own backend services including ingestion pipelines, telemetry processing, and device management systems that provide real-time network visibility and quantum-safe intelligence.
In this role, you will own backend services end-to-end — from telemetry ingestion pipelines and time-series storage to processing engines and APIs. You will write production-quality Go and/or Rust code daily and help shape distributed systems architecture across the engineering organization.
Responsibilities
Backend Services & Production Code
- Design and ship production backend services in Go and/or Rust.
- Build and maintain telemetry ingestion pipelines using gNMI, NETCONF, and SNMP.
- Develop RESTful and gRPC APIs for internal and external integrations.
Data Engineering & Storage
- Implement and optimize time-series storage solutions such as InfluxDB and TimescaleDB.
- Build event streaming pipelines using Kafka or Kinesis.
- Design partitioning and archival strategies for scalable ingestion systems.
Platform Reliability & Operations
- Own service reliability, incident response, and on-call operations.
- Instrument services with logging, tracing, and metrics using OpenTelemetry and Prometheus.
- Drive reliability and scalability improvements across the platform.
Cloud-Native Infrastructure
- Deploy containerized services on Kubernetes using Terraform.

Requirements
- 12+ years of backend software engineering experience.
- Hands-on proficiency in Go and/or Rust.
- Experience building distributed data systems and streaming platforms.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts and tradeoffs.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
