About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Process Development Engineer to join our Pyrolysis Test Engineering team. Reporting to the Director of Pyrolysis, you will lead the development and scale-up of next-generation biomass conversion processes from pilot testing through commercial deployment. You will define experimental strategy, drive resolution of complex scale-up challenges, and provide technical leadership across R&D, Engineering, and Operations teams.
This role requires deep process engineering expertise, strong technical judgment, and the ability to translate ambiguous experimental findings into robust, scalable industrial processes.
Your Responsibilities
- Lead development of next-generation pyrolyzers and biomass conversion processes to maximize bio-oil yield, product quality, reliability, and economic performance.
- Define test plans and experimental campaigns that address critical technical uncertainties and inform commercialization decisions.
- Own investigation and resolution of complex process performance, operability, and scale-up challenges across pilot and demonstration systems.
- Develop and validate process models, material and energy balances, and engineering analyses to guide process improvements and future facility design.
- Lead interpretation and communication of experimental results, including recommendations for strategic development priorities.
- Prepare and review process engineering documentation including PFDs, P&IDs, PCNs, SOPs, and process equipment specifications.
- Lead or facilitate process safety activities including HAZOP, FMEA, MOC reviews, and commissioning/startup readiness reviews.
- Partner with Mechanical, Automation, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to ensure successful deployment of new process technologies.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering standards and best practices.
- Support 24/7 operations through a rotating after-hours coverage schedule.
You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in process development or scale-up engineering with pilot-scale systems.
- Demonstrated success scaling chemical or thermochemical technologies from pilot to commercial deployment.
- Deep understanding of heat transfer, reaction engineering, mass and energy balances, process controls, and process safety.

You will lead manufacturing engineering, manufacturing operations, process development, facilities, equipment, yield, and ramp readiness across the full BESS stack, spanning our Burlingame pilot operation and our Sacramento manufacturing facility. This role exists right now because Peak is in a critical operational phase. First commercial customer deliveries are imminent, multi-year supply contracts are landing, and the production system built over the next eighteen months will define cost structure, ramp velocity, and the ability to meet grid-scale demand through 2027 and beyond. You'll partner closely with engineering, supply chain, and the commercial team to bring product to market and stand up the production system that supports it. You'll inherit a strong technical bench and an ambitious roadmap, with autonomy to build the manufacturing organization needed for scale. What You'll Do (Responsibilities) - Lead the manufacturing engineering and process development organization through the ramp from pilot to giga-scale production - Define and execute the production ramp plan, including equipment specification, line layout, yield curves, and cost-down roadmap across Burlingame and Sacramento sites - Build and develop a manufacturing leadership bench spanning process engineering, equipment, quality, automation, and facilities - Partner with engineering to drive design-for-manufacturing into the product roadmap - Own manufacturing KPIs end-to-end: throughput, yield, OEE, cost per kWh, and safety performance - Drive process maturity from pilot-scale engineering handoffs into stable, repeatable, audit-ready production - Establish and manage relationships with equipment OEMs, automation partners, and consumables suppliers - Represent manufacturing in executive forums, board updates, and customer and investor due diligence What You'll Bring (Qualifications) - 10+ years in battery, semiconductor, or other high-volume precision manufacturing with progressive leadership scope - Direct experience scaling from pilot to GWh-level (or equivalent) production with documented yield, cost, and ramp outcomes - Demonstrated success building and leading manufacturing engineering organizations of 50+, including process, equipment, and quality functions - Hands-on fluency with lean manufacturing, SPC, FMEA, Six Sigma, and modern factory operating systems - Experience operating in early-commercialization environments - BS or MS in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent practical experience - Strong commercial instincts regarding cost per kWh drivers and leverage points - Comfort with ambiguity and pace of a growth-stage, venture-backed company Preferred Qualifications - Direct lithium-ion or sodium-ion cell or pack manufacturing experience at commercial scale - Experience transitioning from prototype to commercial product - Familiarity with energy storage system integration and grid-connected operation - Comfort using modern AI tools in day-to-day workflow Compensation & Benefits The salary range for this role is $233,000-$275,000, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills.
