Senior Software Engineer - Sea Freight BPA (AI‑augmented) (m/f/d)

Senior • Hybrid

Wroclaw, Poland

It's more than a job

In this IT role, you will manage, develop, and support the technology infrastructure that powers Kuehne+Nagel’s global systems and operations. This contribution is vital to making both special and ordinary moments in the lives of people a reality. In fact, your work enables our teams to deliver fresh fruit, time-sensitive healthcare products and much more to people all around the world. Working in IT at Kuehne+Nagel contributes to more than we imagine.

Your Role We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer (m/f/d) to join our agile Sea Freight BPA (Business Process Automation) team. In this role, you will develop SALOG, our core platform supporting global forwarding. You will work alongside a global team of engineers and analysts, building products that deliver innovative solutions for our stakeholders.

You write and own code, leveraging AI agents to get the job done. You bring the engineering judgment — defining intent, steering agents, and ensuring what gets shipped is correct, maintainable, and production-ready.

How you create impact

  • Be part of the full software development cycle: design, implement, and deliver features in collaboration with stakeholders and users.

  • Write clean, maintainable code and take ownership of what you ship — with AI agents as your primary delivery lever.

  • Direct AI agents effectively: define clear intent, guide generation, and steer towards the right solution.

  • Own the outcome of AI-generated code — reviewing for correctness, security, and long-term maintainability before it ships.

  • Process Orchestration: Learn and leverage Camunda and BPMN 2.0 to model and steer complex business processes that power global Sea Freight.

  • Stay current with evolving AI agentic development practices and actively bring new capabilities into the team's workflow.

  • Mentor new and junior colleagues and help them grow into effective AI-agentic engineers.

What we would like you to bring

  • Engineering Foundation: Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) and several years of hands-on experience in the Java stack and frontend technologies such as Angular.

  • Technical Stack: Java EE. Experience with testing frameworks (JUnit, Jest, Serenity BDD), relational/NoSQL databases, and build/automation tools (Maven, Git, Jenkins). As a plus: Angular, OpenShift, Docker.

  • Business-Value Focus: You are driven to deliver high-quality products. You combine technical excellence with a customer-centric view, ensuring that technical features translate into tangible business improvements for our Sea Freight operations.

  • BPA & Orchestration: You have a strong interest in Business Process Automation. While prior knowledge of Camunda or BPMN is not required, you are motivated to master these tools and use them to orchestrate complex logistics workflows.

  • AI Ownership: Hands-on experience working with AI agents in day-to-day development — directing, reviewing, and taking ownership of what they produce.

  • System Reasoning: Ability to reason about system behavior, failure modes, and long-term evolution — the higher-level thinking that makes AI-agentic development sustainable.

  • Agile Mindset: Confidence in self-organization and communication, with a willingness to engage in pair/mob programming and foster a culture of feedback.

  • Language: Fluent written and spoken English.

The role combines full disciplinary leadership with hands-on Java architecture, implementation support, AI-augmented engineering practices, hiring, and delivery alignment with a remote Product Lead. 🗂️ Requirements: Several years of hands-on Java experience, Experience leading a software development team with full disciplinary responsibility, Hands-on use of AI agents in software development, Strong software architecture and system-design judgment, Degree in Computer Science or equivalent, Experience with agile delivery practices, Experience with Maven, Git and Jenkins, Fluent written and spoken English, Ability to lead an on-site team in coordination with a remote Product Lead 📃 Skills: Java, AI, Maven, Git, Jenkins, BPMN, Camunda, Angular, OpenShift, Docker 🏢 Description: It's more than a job In this IT role, you will manage, develop, and support the technology infrastructure that powers Kuehne+Nagel’s global systems and operations. In fact, your work enables our teams to deliver fresh fruit, time-sensitive healthcare products and much more to people all around the world. Working in IT at Kuehne+Nagel contributes to more than we imagine. ‎ We are looking for a hands-on IT Team Lead (m/f/d) to build and lead our new Sea Logistics BPA (Business Process Automation) team in Wroclaw. This is a greenfield opportunity: you will be the first hire on the ground, shaping the team culture, leading subsequent hiring decisions, and establishing how the team operates from day one. You will work in close partnership with the Product Lead based in Hamburg — acting as their operational and technical proxy in Wroclaw. Your team will design, build, and own the process orchestration layer for SeaLOG: the logic that steers automated freight workflows worldwide. This is not a people-manager role with occasional code reviews. For a team of this size, the Team Lead is expected to be technically present — taking on architectural decisions, supporting the team through complex problems, and handling smaller implementation tasks when needed. You lead by doing, not only by directing. And you do it with AI as your primary productivity lever. How you create impact • Lead the BPA Wroclaw team with full disciplinary responsibility, including performance reviews, capacity planning, vacation management, and individual development. • Serve as the architectural lead for the team, owning technical design decisions, reviewing critical code, and ensuring implementations remain coherent, scalable, and maintainable. • Provide hands-on technical leadership by taking on support activities, resolving complex technical blockers, and contributing directly to implementation when required. • Establish and model AI-augmented engineering best practices by effectively leveraging AI agents, maintaining accountability for outcomes, and continuously introducing new AI capabilities into team workflows. • Partner with the Product Lead to define team OKRs, translate strategic priorities into actionable goals, and monitor and report on delivery performance and key metrics. • Lead hiring efforts for the Wroclaw team, including defining candidate profiles, conducting interviews, making hiring decisions in collaboration with the Product Lead, and ensuring effective onboarding across the BPA domain, technology stack, AI tooling, and team practices. • Represent the BPA team in cross-functional collaboration with the Product Owner, Business Analyst, and Sea Logistics platform teams to align priorities, dependencies, and delivery plans. • Champion the adoption of the orchestration-first BPA philosophy, driving the development of processes that proactively steer freight workflows rather than simply reacting to events. What we would like you to bring • Technical Depth: Strong Java background — capable of making architecture decisions, unblocking the team hands-on, and contributing directly to implementation when needed. Camunda and BPMN experience is not required, but you must be genuinely motivated to master them. • AI Ownership: Hands-on experience working with AI agents in day-to-day development — directing, reviewing, and taking full ownership of what they produce. You model this practice for the team, not just encourage it. • System Reasoning: Ability to reason about system behavior, failure modes, and long-term evolution — the architectural judgment that makes AI-agentic development sustainable at team scale. • Leadership Maturity: Demonstrated experience leading a software development team with full disciplinary responsibility. You run the team autonomously, know when to decide and when to escalate, and develop people through coaching rather than control. • Process-Oriented Mindset: You think of workflows, dependencies, and system behavior — not just features and sprints. A background in BPA, workflow orchestration, or similar is a strong advantage. • Remote Leadership Readiness: You are comfortable being the primary on-site lead for a team whose Product Lead is in a different country. You maintain alignment proactively, not reactively. • Cultural Builder: A greenfield team has no inherited culture — only what you establish. You create environments where people communicate openly, grow deliberately, and take ownership of what they ship. • Engineering Foundation: Degree in Computer Science or equivalent; several years of hands-on Java experience. Familiarity with agile delivery practices and modern tooling (Maven, Git, Jenkins). As a plus: Angular, OpenShift, Docker. • Language: Fluent written and spoken English. What's in it for you Your work will have a direct influence on the future of logistics and IT. Your colleagues are experts who shape the IT industry in Poland and worldwide. We want you to feel comfortable in your working surroundings. Therefore, we are offering you flexible working hours and a mobile working arrangement. We value teamwork, continuous learning and diversity. Kuehne + Nagel is offering you a custom-made career through individual planning and supervisors who support and advice you in every way. Personally, you get supported by a lot of work-life balance offerings and supplementary health insurance. Who we are Logistics shapes everyday life - from the goods we consume to the healthcare we rely on. 🏢 Summary: Join a cross-functional product team to build and operate scalable, high-throughput Java backend solutions for eCommerce core processes. The role combines hands-on architecture, quality ownership and product discovery, with daily use of AI-assisted and agentic coding workflows. 🗂️ Requirements: Java 21+ backend experience, Reactive or asynchronous programming experience, Virtual threads experience, Distributed backend systems experience, Event-driven messaging experience, CI/CD and automated testing experience, Code review and observability experience, AI coding tools and agentic workflow experience, Product-oriented cross-functional collaboration 📃 Skills: Java, Vert.x, Reactor, Kafka, CI/CD, DDD, SOLID, Claude, Copilot, Scrum, Kanban 🏢 Description: We are one of Switzerland's leading online shops in both B2C and B2B - a combination that is nearly unique in Europe. Behind it stands one of the most modern logistics operations on the continent: highly automated, scalable and with further growth potential. Here you do more than build software. You bring your personality, actively shape the department and help define the eCommerce of tomorrow. The role Join a cross-functional product team and build scalable solutions with real impact for our customers and core business processes. You bring curiosity, team spirit and a genuine appetite for learning - and you take part in shaping not just the implementation, but the architecture, quality standards and the question of what should be built in the first place. What to expect A collaborative cross-functional product team with a hands-on Team Lead, a Product Manager and several T-shaped Full-Stack Engineers who share ownership together. You work in Scrum or Kanban depending on what fits the team. Engineers roll up their sleeves in refinement and actively contribute to architecture and product decisions - not just implementation. Plenty of room to shape high code quality within your team and across team boundaries. Enough legacy, complexity and grown structures to give you real opportunities to make things meaningfully better - one step at a time. What you bring We are a good match if you: Java & Backend Depth Bring deep, hands-on experience with Java 21+ - including modern language features such as records, sealed classes, pattern matching and structured concurrency Have practical experience with reactive or asynchronous programming models - with Vert.x, Project Reactor or comparable toolkits; you understand the non-blocking programming model and know when to apply it Have worked with Java virtual threads (Project Loom) and understand how they change concurrency models in practice - not just in theory Have built and operated distributed backend systems at scale - ideally in eCommerce or comparable high-throughput domains Are comfortable with event-driven communication patterns (Kafka, messaging systems) and understand the trade-offs between synchronous and asynchronous approaches Engineering Practices Have lived modern engineering practices in your daily work: CI/CD, automated testing, decoupling, code reviews and observability See concepts like DDD, Clean Architecture, Event-Driven Architecture, SOLID, feature flags and dependency injection as practical tools - not buzzwords - and apply them with pragmatism and judgement Are a strong advocate of "you build it, you own it" and have experience in environments that release multiple times per day Guide the team on code quality and meaningful testing practices - not coverage as a goal in itself, but tests that catch real bugs AI / Agentic Coding - a core expectation, not a nice-to-have Use AI coding tools - such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot - as a natural part of your daily workflow for code generation, test writing, refactoring and documentation Go beyond autocomplete: you actively explore agentic workflows such as automated PR review, scaffolding, and multi-step code generation - and you evaluate their output critically before committing Understand the risks: you know that AI-generated code can accelerate technical debt and erode understanding if not reviewed carefully, and you enforce review standards accordingly Help introduce and shape AI tooling adoption within the team - sharing what works, what does not and where the limits are Collaboration & Product Mindset Enjoy sharing knowledge through pair programming, whiteboard sessions and code reviews - and actively help raise the engineering level of the team Like working closely with Product Managers and genuinely want to understand the problem being solved - you help shape requirements and think from a user and business perspective Value real agility: short iterations, fast learning, active feedback loops and data-informed decisions Are a warm communicator who values an open learning culture, builds personal connections within the team and does not take themselves too seriously We are probably not a good match if you: Prefer frameworks like SAFe or projects that start with a fixed requirements document Have worked primarily in heavily regulated environments without experience in a fast-moving, product-oriented setup with distributed systems Are most comfortable in models where infrastructure, backend, frontend, testing and product thinking are kept strictly separate Prefer to receive requirements fully formed rather than shaping them together with Product Management See AI tools as a threat or a gimmick rather than a genuine productivity multiplier worth mastering See ongoing learning primarily as the employer's responsibility rather than your own intrinsic motivation Are more frustrated than energised by imperfect systems - spoiler: we are not there yet Keep work and good humour strictly apart

🏢 Summary: Senior Backend Engineer role owning the secure, multi-tenant trust layer for an AI-native claims platform. The position covers backend services, data models, APIs, integrations, and production operations for regulated claims data, with remote async collaboration and occasional onsite travel. 🗂️ Requirements: Senior-level backend or deep full-stack backend ownership experience, 3+ years of production product ownership, Python or TypeScript proficiency, Multi-tenant SaaS experience, Authentication, authorization and permissions experience, Distributed systems judgment, Cloud infrastructure experience, Database schema design and performance tuning, Security-focused handling of sensitive and regulated data, API design and backward compatibility, CI/CD and automated testing experience, End-to-end ownership from design through production rollout, English communication skills, Remote, async collaboration capability, Daily AI tooling experience 📃 Skills: Python, TypeScript, AWS, GCP, Azure, GDPR, CICD, APIs, SaaS, Codex, Claude 🏢 Description: Senior Backend Engineer Location: Remote This role is for a senior backend engineer who can design and own the trust layer of an AI-native claims operation. We want someone who is strong technically, communicates clearly, and has the judgment to make systems simpler, safer, and easier to evolve. Expect real ownership from system design through production — especially around multi-tenancy, access control, and regulated data. You solve ambiguous problems by shaping the right architectural approach, then ship, iterate, and keep it healthy in production. We build AI-native. Our agents handle claim logic; you own the system underneath — secure by design, multi-tenant, and compliant. Engineers use Codex, Claude Code, and agents they build themselves. We invest in harness engineering through skills, CLIs, logs, traces, and orchestration. This is a role for someone in a high-growth chapter of their career, who wants to do the best work of their life, learn fast, and win as part of a team going all-in on a hard mission. Location — Remote. International team; main office in Berlin. Expect async-first collaboration across time zones and occasional travel for onsites. Why this role You will own the application trust model behind our AI-native claims platform. While our agents decide what happens next on a claim, you make sure the system underneath is secure, multi-tenant, and compliant by design. You build the core services, the data model, and the partner-facing APIs that let insurers, property managers, and restoration companies work with claims in real time. High autonomy, small senior team — backend decisions directly shape how we handle regulated data. What you will own Design and ship backend services, APIs, data flows, and background processing for the claims platform Own the canonical data model for claims, stakeholders, policies, and documents Implement multi-tenancy and access control so every customer, partner, and user sees only what they should Build secure, stable integrations to CRM/core systems and external partner APIs Ensure GDPR-compliant data handling, isolation, and auditability across the stack Turn vague requirements into concrete technical plans, trade-offs, and execution Own services after launch: reliability, observability, performance, and incident follow-through Instrument what you ship and use production signal to iterate — not just to keep the lights on Design and maintain developer tooling, automated tests, and CI/CD pipelines Work closely with AI, frontend, product, and ops to deliver end-to-end outcomes Improve engineering leverage with AI tooling and automation, not AI as a gimmick Raise the quality bar through code review, design review, and pragmatic technical leadership What strong performance looks like You reliably move important backend work forward without waiting to be tightly managed Your systems are easier to operate and easier to change because of your design decisions You make smart trade-offs to unblock shipping — and you stand by those decisions Security and tenancy are baked into how you design, not bolted on later You keep raising the bar on engineering excellence for yourself and everyone else What we are looking for Strong senior-level backend (or full-stack with deep backend ownership) experience in production systems — typically 3+ years with real product ownership Strong Python and/or TypeScript skills; ability to design clean, maintainable backend code Experience building or operating multi-tenant SaaS Experience with authentication, authorization, and permissions models Good distributed systems judgment: concurrency, failure handling, data consistency, async work, and service boundaries Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) Comfort with database schema design and performance tuning for real-time / high-throughput scenarios A security-conscious approach: enterprise-grade requirements, careful handling of sensitive data, and clear thinking about the security implications of systems and AI workflows You design clean, stable APIs and know how to keep them backwards-compatible You are used to CI/CD, automated testing, and shipping iteratively Ability to go from problem statement to design to production rollout with real ownership Clear written and verbal communication in English — you explain systems, trade-offs, and incidents without hiding behind jargon Comfortable working remote in an international team: strong written communication, async habits, and proactive ownership without constant oversight AI-native working style: you already use AI tools in your daily workflow, and you want to improve how the team builds — better tooling, workflows, and engineering leverage

Your focus will be on making sure requirements and configuration are understood, dependencies are visible, decisions happen at the right time, and customers know exactly what is needed to reach the next milestone. This is a delivery role in a fast, AI-accelerated engineering environment . Development can move quickly, which means the critical path is often determined by customer input, integrations and external dependencies rather than engineering capacity. Your job will be to identify and remove blockers, manage expectations and maintain momentum — not add process for the sake of process. You do not need to be an engineer, but you do need enough technical literacy to have meaningful conversations with customers and engineering teams about APIs, integrations, environments and deployment dependencies. The role is fully remote, working closely with an international team, including colleagues based in Canada. The initial engagement is expected to be fractional , with allocation depending on the number of customer implementations running in parallel. Planning and coordinating UAT, ensuring customers and internal teams are prepared and blockers are addressed quickly. Coordinating production readiness, go-live activities and the transition into ongoing BAU operations. Identifying and managing risks, issues, dependencies and external blockers throughout the implementation lifecycle. Working closely with product and engineering teams to understand technical dependencies and translate them into clear customer actions and expectations. Holding effective customer conversations around APIs, integrations, environments and deployment dependencies . Driving customer decisions and inputs required to keep fast-moving implementations on track. Setting clear expectations around scope, timelines, responsibilities and dependencies. Adapting delivery plans as implementation priorities and external dependencies change. Coordinating effectively across distributed teams and time zones. Continuously improving the delivery approach for short, repeatable implementation cycles . The Essentials We’re Seeking Strong experience delivering enterprise software or SaaS implementations , ideally within a Professional Services environment. Proven project or delivery management experience across the complete customer implementation lifecycle. Hands-on experience with customer requirements and configuration gathering, MVP / pilot planning and UAT coordination . Strong risk, issue and dependency management skills. Experience coordinating across customer, product and engineering teams . Ability to successfully manage multiple implementations running in parallel. Strong customer-facing communication skills and confidence working with senior and technical stakeholders. Experience delivering projects remotely across distributed teams and multiple time zones. Sufficient technical literacy to discuss APIs, integrations, environments and deployment dependencies with customers and engineers. Ability to understand technical constraints and dependencies without relying on engineering teams to translate every detail. Experience working in a fast delivery environment where engineering execution is rapid and customer inputs or external dependencies often determine the critical path.
