Senior Data Engineer, Menu Personalization

About the Team

Menu Personalization decides what millions of customers see when they open HelloFresh each week. The team owns the recommender systems that match customers to recipes across our global markets, and brings together Data Scientists, Backend Engineers, Data Engineers, ML Engineers, and Product to take ideas from experiment to production. The work directly shapes customer experience and business growth: when personalization gets better, customers find recipes they love faster, and HelloFresh becomes a stronger weekly habit.

About the role: What's in the Box

This position is for an expert in building large-scale data and ML platforms. You will join a high-impact team of data scientists and engineers, focusing exclusively on menu personalization. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal part in designing, implementing, and operating the data pipelines and feature platform that power personalized recommendation algorithms for culinary products across global markets.

You will have a tangible impact on customer experience and business growth by ensuring the data and ML infrastructure that fuels personalization is reliable, performant, and easy to build on. You will work closely with Data Scientists to take models from notebook to production, partner with Backend and ML Engineers on online inference paths, and shape how the team manages features and training datasets at scale. Success in this role requires a curious mindset, the ability to prioritize problem statements, and the expertise to translate ML requirements into robust data systems.

What you’ll do: The Recipe

• Become an integral part of a high-impact team covering menu personalization.

• Design, build, and operate batch and streaming data pipelines that power model training and real-time inference.

• Build high-quality, well-modeled data pipelines for analytical purposes, enabling reliable reporting, experimentation analysis, and self-serve insight across the team.

• Build and evolve the team's Feature Store, ensuring point-in-time correctness for training and low-latency online serving.

• Partner with Data Scientists to operationalize recommender models, embeddings pipelines, and continuous retraining.

• Make ML systems observable through data quality checks, training/serving skew detection, and lineage.

• Work with state-of-the-art technologies like AWS (EMR, Glue, S3, etc), Kafka, PySpark, Airflow, Databricks, MLFlow, and Claude (AI).

• Collaborate closely within other functions (data science, ML engineering, backend engineering, product) to translate business objectives into concrete data infrastructure.

• Contribute to a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment, providing technical guidance and coaching to team members and stakeholders.

What you’ll bring: The Ingredients 

• Proven track record of scientific or engineering work (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD) in computer science, software engineering or related field.

• 5+ years of work experience as a Data Engineer, including delivery of production data.

• Fluency in Python and PySpark and building large scale high quality data pipelines on a modern cloud stack

• Technical proficiency in SQL for retrieving, manipulating, and analyzing large datasets.

• Experience with software development practices and tools such as Git, CI/CD, Docker, and AWS.

• Expertise in leveraging Generative AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to support development, experimentation, and documentation.

• Exceptional communication capabilities to interact effectively with Data Scientists, ML Engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders.
