Backend Developer (Java + Cobol) in Germany

Andersen is hiring a Backend Developer (Java + Cobol) in Germany for a project modernizing legacy systems and building secure enterprise solutions in high-availability environments. 

The customer is a large international technology provider delivering end-to-end digital solutions for enterprise-level organizations. The company focuses on IT consulting, cloud services, cybersecurity, and managed operations, supporting clients across various industries with complex digital transformation needs. The project is focused on a long-term modernization initiative aimed at replacing legacy backend systems with Java 21. It includes developing and maintaining secure enterprise solutions within high-availability environments using technologies such as IBM WebSphere, OpenShift, and z/OS. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Transforming legacy backend business logic from COBOL to modern Java technologies within a dedicated Scrum environment. 

  • Conducting independent analysis and creating concepts for software development tasks of basic to medium complexity. 

  • Ensuring code quality through Code Reviews, Junit testing, and performance optimization. 

  • Executing and monitoring background processes and batch jobs using the APX job control system. 

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deploy, test, and maintain applications in IBM Host z/OS and RHEL environments. 

  • Managing requirements, technical documentation, and knowledge transfer within the Atlassian ecosystem. 

 

Must-have: 

  • Hands-on experience in Java 21 (Java EE) development, with an understanding of enterprise architecture, runtime environments, and core security standards for 2+ years. 

  • Practical experience with IBM WebSphere (AS 9, Liberty) and containerized environments like OpenShift or Kubernetes. 

  • Strong knowledge of relational databases such as DB2, Oracle 23, and PostgreSQL. 

  • Ability to read and debug COBOL code to facilitate successful business logic migration. 

  • Familiarity with Enterprise tools: IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse (Jade), IBM Rational Application Developer, and Jira/Confluence. 

  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and version control systems like Git, Maven, or Jenkins. 

  • Level of English – from Intermediate+ and above. 

  • Level of German – from Intermediate+ and above.
