The Interplanetary Sciences Program was established to expand access to scientific exploration across our solar system. Its mission is to make planetary research faster, more affordable, and more capable than ever before by rethinking how science missions are designed, built, and operated. About the Role:
As a Senior Avionics Hardware Engineer within the Interplanetary Program at Relativity Space, you will take ownership of the design, development, and delivery of spacecraft avionics systems from concept through flight. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create reliable, high-performance avionics that enable deep-space exploration.
This position requires a highly motivated engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can execute with autonomy. You will help define the foundation of Relativity’s future interplanetary avionics architecture while setting the technical standards for future team growth. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop complete avionics systems, including architecture, design, integration, and verification, from initial concept through flight-qualified hardware
- Collaborate with propulsion, guidance and control, thermal and software teams to ensure seamless integration and performance of avionics systems
- Implement robust design and test processes that ensure reliability and safety for deep-space missions
- Lead the technical execution of avionics hardware builds, including PCB design, harnessing, embedded systems, and environmental qualification
- Coordinate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to manage component selection, testing, and delivery schedules
- Maintain accurate design documentation, test plans, and reports, demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills
About You:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field
- 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and delivering avionics or electronics for aerospace systems or similarly complex environments
- Demonstrated ability to take a design from concept through production with minimal supervision
- Hands-on experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, embedded software interfaces, and system-level testing
- Proven track record of working cross-functionally and communicating technical information clearly to diverse audiences
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment, demonstrating adaptability and problem-solving skills
Nice to haves but not required:
- Direct technical experience in Mars missions is a plus
- Experience with NASA aerospace systems engineering practices in an applied / new-space manner is a plus
- Experience with deep-space or high-radiation avionics systems
- Background in spaceflight hardware environmental testing and qualification

About the Role: As the Avionics Systems Lead Engineer within the Interplanetary Program, you will own revolutionizing the next generation of in-space compute and storage capability by leveraging the latest terrestrial technologies and challenging the status quo of how high-capability compute and storage are done in the space sector. You will be responsible for delivering fully functional space-ready compute units to the flight spacecraft as well as setting up ground-based hardware twins for hardware in the loop and terrestrial based compute capability. You will be working closely with the science team to maximize capability by balancing the compute (CPU, GPU, TPU, etc..), memory, storage needs with the technical constraints of the flight spacecraft (power, thermal, EMI, mechanical, etc…). This role will also work closely in conjunction with the software team to bring up the core software infrastructure both on the spacecraft and on the ground side, and iterating with the software team to ensure the full compute system operates as intended in all environments. This role will be a high responsibility, high autonomy, and high accountability role within a fast-paced, iterative environment, where rapid prototyping, early testing, and continuous learning are key to success. You’ll lead hands-on development campaigns to evaluate key technologies, derisk interfaces, and validate performance before full system integration. You’ll also work across internal and external teams to turn concepts into hardware, balancing agility and rigor as you move quickly from analysis to prototypes to flight-ready systems. Engineers work across domains to understand complex problems, identify solutions, and implement them – all with deep technical knowledge, not just documentation. The other team focuses on the vehicle itself, working across teams to ensure all subsystems of Terran R function together as intended, burning down technical risk, and driving informed decisions at every stage of the vehicle lifecycle. Engineers are empowered to lead high-impact efforts, from major test campaigns to console operations during launch, and are trusted to drive improvements across fluids, structures, avionics, and more. Regardless of which team you’re on, you’ll be part of a high-visibility, high-impact department at a pivotal moment in the program, where decisions made today on trades, architecture, and process will shape not just the first launch, but the long-term trajectory of Relativity. About the Role: Work closely with engineering leadership across the company ensuring the systems engineering tools and processes are enabling responsible engineers to move fast while also providing the right amount of engineering rigor to prevent downstream issues Focus on creating and rolling out new processes while focusing on streamlining and eliminating processes that are no longer effective or does not scale with the ambitious launch ramp rate Manage a team of engineers who are helping drive the existing Systems Engineering process while also focusing on reducing risk at the Subsystem and Component level as we step into Stage Testing Look broadly at existing requirements to make sure verification actives are occurring at the right time and are burning down risk prior to stage testing Ensure other test objectives are properly captured at the subsystem level and all affected parties are aligned on how the objectives will be met Mentor team members and engineers in other departments while providing a second set of technical eyes ensuring processes are being leveraged to help burn down technical risk About You: Bachelors degree in Engineering or technical field 5+ years of experience in technical positions working on system engineering, system definition, design, and development, system architecture, system integration, and/or T&E. Full product lifecycle experience on at least one program, preferably two or more (from concept through production/operations) Proven ability to work in a dynamic environment that includes working with changing needs and requirements.
