Senior • On-site

18,333 - 20,833 USD/yr

Seattle, WA

Who we are

Metropolis is an artificial intelligence company that uses computer vision technology to enable frictionless, checkout-free experiences in the real world. Today, we are reimagining parking to enable millions of consumers to just "drive in and drive out." We envision a future where people transact in the real world with a speed, ease, and convenience that is unparalleled, even online. Tomorrow, we will power checkout-free experiences anywhere you go to make the everyday experiences of living, working, and playing remarkable - giving us back our most valuable asset, time.

Who you are

Metropolis is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Revenue Platform team. In this role, you will own the technical direction for our billing, payments, and invoicing infrastructure, charting the course for a system that already processes tens of millions in monthly transactions. You will balance immediate business needs with long-term architectural improvements, identifying high-impact enhancements and designing practical migration strategies to support our rapid growth.

As a technical leader, you will partner closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to solve complex challenges involving pricing rules, subscription billing, and enterprise invoicing. You are a systems thinker who enjoys understanding how things work and building the roadmaps that improve a platform while it runs. Your work will directly shape how Metropolis monetizes its platform and expands into new verticals beyond parking, ensuring our financial systems remain resilient, compliant, and remarkably efficient.

What you’ll do

  • Own the technical architecture and evolution of Metropolis's billing, payments, and invoicing systems, establishing standards for financial accuracy, transaction integrity, and compliance that ensure every dollar is correctly captured and accounted for
  • Design and implement resilient payment processing with support for multiple payment gateways (Stripe, etc.), intelligent routing between processors, retry strategies for failed transactions, and graceful handling of partial failures to maximize payment success rates
  • Build comprehensive monitoring and reporting for revenue operations, including payment success rates, billing accuracy metrics, reconciliation dashboards, failed transaction alerts, and audit trails that provide visibility from customer transactions to accounting close
  • Partner with finance and operations teams on payment failures, billing disputes, refund workflows, and reconciliation issues – building tools and automation that reduce manual intervention and improve mean time to resolution for customer-impacting revenue issues
  • Drive adoption of revenue system best practices across services, including idempotent payment processing, distributed transaction handling, compensation workflows for failures, audit logging, and testing strategies that ensure financial correctness
  • Own integrations with external systems, including payment gateways, ERP, data analytics, etc., ensuring reliable data flow and maintaining compliance requirements across the revenue stack

What we’re looking for

  • 8+ years of hands-on engineering experience with a focus on building revenue systems like payment platforms
  • Strong systems thinking for financial correctness with proven ability to design distributed revenue systems that handle edge cases gracefully: partial failures, duplicate requests, timing issues, currency conversion, tax calculation, and maintaining transaction integrity across service boundaries
  • Database and financial data expertise, including transaction isolation, audit logging, point-in-time recovery, handling financial data migrations, and experience with systems that require both high availability and absolute correctness
  • Payment gateway and integration experience with production knowledge of Stripe, PayPal, or similar processors; tax calculation services; accounting system integrations; and the operational reality of depending on external financial services, including compliance requirements like PCI-DSS
  • Excellent technical communication with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams (particularly finance, accounting, and data teams), document complex systems, conduct post-mortems, and establish reliability standards organization-wide
  • Experience with sophisticated usage of rapidly developing AI-assisted development skills in real-world codebases, including fluent use of Claude Code/GPT Codex/Windsurf or similar tools in multi-agent mode, spec-driven development (SDD), MCP/skills optimization, context/prompt engineering
  • Local to the Seattle area

While not required, these are a plus

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a relevant engineering discipline
  • Expert-level revenue systems engineering with hands-on experience building billing platforms, payment processing pipelines, reconciliation systems, and handling challenges like idempotent transactions, failed payment retries, proration logic, multi-currency support, and revenue recognition – you've seen these problems before and know the patterns that work
  • Expert revenue systems engineering with hands-on experience building billing platforms, payment processing, reconciliation, and managing complex challenges like idempotent transactions, payment retries, proration, multi-currency support, and revenue recognition.
  • Financial systems expertise with deep experience implementing audit trails, reconciliation workflows, revenue reporting, and compliance controls at scale – you understand what it takes to maintain penny-perfect accuracy
  • Java expertise with a deep understanding of JVM performance, concurrency, and operational characteristics. Scala experience is a big plus
  • Experience with AI-powered development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar agentic coding tools for enhanced productivity

🏢 Summary: Staff Engineer role focused on leading the design, evolution, and reliability of a high-scale distributed backend platform that generates and distributes real-time customer offers. The position combines deep hands-on backend engineering with architectural leadership in event-driven systems. It emphasizes scalability, performance, observability, and operational excellence in a complex production environment. 🗂️ Requirements: Experience owning complex backend systems end-to-end in scalable production environments, Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems, Strong backend engineering expertise in Java, Solid understanding of JVM performance, Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka, Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and/or Vert.x, Hands-on experience with Redis, Hands-on experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Grafana, or Kibana, Strong system design skills in event-driven and asynchronous architectures, Knowledge of concurrency and non-blocking system design, Experience with scalability, resiliency, and fault-tolerance strategies, Experience debugging production incidents in distributed environments 📃 Skills: Java, JVM, Kafka, Spring, Vert.x, Redis, OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Datadog, Grafana, Kibana, Kubernetes 🏢 Description: ABOUT THE ROLE We are looking for a passionate and highly experienced Staff Backend Engineer to help lead the design, development, reliability, and evolution of a complex distributed backend platform. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys going deep into understanding both the technical and business context behind problems, not just implementing solutions mechanically. We value engineers who are curious, proactive, and driven by learning - people who enjoy experimenting, challenging assumptions, and troubleshooting complex systems until the root cause is fully understood. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across architecture, engineering practices, and platform evolution while remaining hands-on when needed. You will help teams make better technical decisions, raise engineering standards, simplify complex systems, and create solutions that balance business needs with long-term platform health. We're looking for someone who is comfortable working in ambiguity, treats failure as an opportunity to learn, welcomes constructive feedback, and leads through collaboration, ownership, and execution rather than authority. ABOUT YOUR FUTURE PLATFORM TEAM We build and operate a critical backend platform that generates, validates, and distributes customer-facing offers across multiple markets in real time. The system sits at the intersection of pricing, configuration, compliance, and localization - where milliseconds matter, correctness is non-negotiable, and small mistakes can have large-scale impact. Our systems apply complex configuration and licensing rules, handle market and event-level blocking, manage multi-language localization, and transform raw pricing data into customer-ready offers consumed across the ecosystem. We process high-throughput event streams, deal with constantly changing data, and solve problems that require both strong engineering fundamentals and deep domain understanding. Senior Fullstack Product Engineer - Typescript/Node/AI

Stockholm, Sweden

🏢 Summary: Senior full-stack consultant role to lead the end-to-end build and delivery of a self-service advertising platform enabling merchants to book and monitor campaigns across Meta, Snapchat, and Adform. The engagement focuses on shipping an MVP booking and reporting flow, integrating third-party ad APIs, and designing scalable architecture for future PIM and billing extensions. Hybrid role in Stockholm, starting in August for 6 months with possible extension. 🗂️ Requirements: 5+ years software engineering experience, End-to-end product ownership (scoping, build, delivery, project management), Strong TypeScript proficiency, Strong Node.js proficiency, Full-stack development experience, Production experience with third-party API integrations, Experience with AI coding tools (Claude Code or Codex), Ability to set guardrails and review AI-generated code, Availability from August, Based in Stockholm with hybrid onsite availability, Willingness to travel to Oslo when required 📃 Skills: TypeScript, Node.js, Vue, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Airflow, Meta, Snapchat, Adform, APIs, Claude, Codex 🏢 Description: Start: August Duration: 6 months + possible extension Location: Hybrid setup from Stockholm Please note: we are only looking for someone based in Stockholm. Background We need a senior full-stack consultant to lead the build of a self-service advertising platform for, where merchants book and monitor their own short-term campaigns and the system runs the ads across Meta, Snapchat, and Adform. A spec and an early prototype already exist, so the job is to make it real, ship it, and improve it over a six-month engagement. Scope of work The platform lets store merchants plan, launch, and monitor short-term campaigns themselves, with little manual work, and it needs to scale to hundreds of stores and thousands of campaigns. A merchant books a campaign through a guided form, the system creates the ads across Meta, Snapchat, and Display/Adform, and pulls performance data into a reporting dashboard. The build covers a merchant-facing booking flow, the third-party ad-platform integrations, scheduled reporting jobs, and a billing layer that reconciles booked budget against actual spend. The MVP is a working booking-and-reporting flow. PIM integration and detailed invoicing come later, so you structure the data and architecture now to support that without a rewrite. You won't start from a blank page. With a spec and an early prototype in hand, you pressure-test it with the client and the merchants, ship a first version, learn from how people use it, and improve from there. You own the engagement end to end, from scoping through the technical decisions, delivery, and project management. Ways of working and stack The work is execution-first and AI-native. We build with Claude Code and Codex against in-house skills that teach the agents our conventions, and an internal platform handles the infrastructure toil. The agents produce a lot of the code, so the value is in judgment: you set the guardrails, check the output, and decide what to build and what to cut. Our frontend runs on Vue 3 and TypeScript; backend services on Node.js over PostgreSQL, deployed to Kubernetes; data in BigQuery and ClickHouse, orchestrated with Airflow. Knowing the stack helps but isn't required. Requirements (Mandatory) You must meet all of these. Cover each one in your response. Minimum 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of owning a product area end to end: scoping, build, delivery, and project management against a client who expects to see progress. Strong in TypeScript and Node.js, working across backend and frontend. Experience integrating third-party APIs in production. Work with agentic coding tools such as Claude Code or Codex, and can set guardrails and judge their output. Available from August, able to work from the Stockholm office on a hybrid basis, and open to travelling to Oslo when the work calls for it. How you work Start with the problem, not the code. You talk to users, form your own product opinions, and decide what's worth building instead of waiting for a spec. Use prototypes to think and to bring others along, getting something rough in front of people early. Have real views on where tools like Claude Code help and where they get in the way. High ownership and low ego. You drive your own work forward, push back on a spec that's wrong, and work well in a setup that's still taking shape.

You'll own features end-to-end — from pixel-perfect frontend work to shipping backend functionality when needed. This is not a siloed role. You'll move fast, make real decisions, and have direct impact on a product used by people who care deeply about learning and research. We don't have managers. We have engineers who own their work. TECH STACK The stack is heavily TypeScript. On the frontend: SvelteKit, Tailwind, DaisyUI, and Playwright, with DDD and CQRS patterns. On the backend: Node.js, Fastify, PostgreSQL, and queues. ML components are in Python. The stack is pragmatic, not dogmatic — tools may shift as the product evolves. WHAT WE LOOK FOR Elite communication You set accurate expectations and live up to them. No surprises, no ambiguity about status or blockers. Deep resilience Bugs, crises, tough reviews — you have a large buffer before stress impacts your output. You don't crack under pressure. No ego We're here to build something great, not to manage insecurities. The best idea wins, regardless of who had it. Product mastery You understand the engineering principles behind the best software ever made — and care deeply about the difference between good and great. Independent and obsessive by nature You go deep on everything you touch. You're a lifelong learner who can't help but care about quality. Being an ex-founder is a bonus. You own the call. High-bandwidth collaboration Constant communication means everyone has context without formal gates or status meetings. Direct feedback Code reviews are blunt, concise, and respectful. We say what we mean. Ruthless efficiency We aggressively adopt any tool — AI included — that increases speed and leverage. Limited frontend test coverage Supplemented by strong architecture and top talent, not bureaucratic QA processes. RECRUITMENT PROCESS Recruiter screening — a short intro call to align on basics. 1-on-1 with the engineering lead — a conversation about how you think and work. Technical challenge (~4 hours) — use AI, Google, or any resource you need. We care about the result, not the method. One-month paid contract — with the possibility to extend indefinitely. Honest, frequent feedback throughout so you always know where you stand. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Salary $100,000 – $150,000 depending on experience. Equity and profit share Core team members receive both equity and profit share as part of the compensation package. Unlimited PTO Use your own judgement — we won't count days. Steep learning curve You'll grow faster here than almost anywhere else — by design, not accident. Real ownership No managers capping your authority. You own your work end-to-end, with the full trust of the team behind you.
