Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in full-stack development, distributed computing, infrastructure design, or software architecture.
  • Experience in privacy and safety domains.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience providing clarity and alignment across the organization on goals, outcomes, and timelines.
  • Experience with GenAI or ML frameworks, particularly in the areas where privacy intersects with these technologies (e.g., provenance tracking, privacy-safe techniques such as differential privacy, etc.) or related compliance experience (e.g. EU AI Act).
  • Experience in identity, privacy, safety, or security domains, and leading large, cross-functional engineering projects.
  • Ability to take initiative with a bias towards execution.
  • Passion to drive technical and product impact, particularly in the area of privacy and compliance.

The YouTube Identity and Privacy team's mission is to empower YouTube users to represent themselves, enjoy a customized experience, and protect their privacy and data. Among other areas, the team is responsible for YouTube's identity solutions, privacy, and compliance, which is a critical area to keep users' trust and YouTube's long-term business sustainability.

In this role, you will work with a wide variety of stakeholders and are excited by the reach of YouTube. You'll have the responsibility to protect its user base.

As the Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for thought leadership in identifying the problems worth solving, finding the technical insights to solve the problem, and working cross-functionally across the team to drive the solutions.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead critical and highly impactful privacy and compliance projects for YouTube. Build a long-term outlook, strategy, and roadmap to ensure YouTube's sustainable compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Work with Engineers, Area Tech Leads, Product Managers, and Legal partners to deliver full-stack projects that involve product, UX, infrastructure, and policy.
  • Think strategically to develop innovative offerings and influence distributed, cross-product area partners and teams.
  • Collaborate closely with privacy and compliance teams across Core, Search, Ads, Workspace, and represent YouTube in cross-Google projects.
  • Motivate others by creating a shared sense of outlook, clear communication, and collaborative leadership approach.
