Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of engineering leadership experience.
  • 10 years of experience leading multiple engineering teams and senior technical leaders (i.e., Managers and Principal/Staff Engineers).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience managing an organization through change.
  • Experience with technical aptitude, with the ability to balance perspectives of the infrastructure engineers that build the systems and internal customers that use the systems.
  • Understanding of data warehousing, big data processing, and distributed storage systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization by creating a shared sense of outlook and purpose.
  • Innovative thinker with a collaborative approach to problem solving, passion for working in a highly cross-functional environment, and ability to manage ambiguity.

About the job

Within Core is the Data organization, Core Data manages and develops the infrastructure for acquiring, processing, storing, analyzing, and serving data. This team builds end-to-end solutions for discovering, understanding, protecting, relating, indexing, and querying data for Google’s products and experiences.

The Data Analytics and Insights (DANI) organization within Core Data focuses on the critical user journey of deriving insight from structured data at Google scale. Frequently the journey starts with end user activity data from Google applications, moves and transforms in pipelines, lands in a data warehouse, and then is queried by BI tools or ML-driven anomaly detection to find actionable insights. The DANI systems that power these journeys also underpin many of Google’s businesses including Ads, Search, Google Cloud, GDM, and Finance, and are leveraged for a wide variety of use cases including BI and SQL analytics, data science and interactive analysis, real-time data serving for applications, and machine learning.

As Engineering Director, you will lead this organization and lead the team that is responsible for Google's data warehousing system, serving as the central repository for business-critical event records. It underpins data analysis, business intelligence, and product development across virtually all Product Areas at Google. You will be responsible for the overall technical outlook, strategic direction, execution, and operational health of the entire ecosystem. This includes the collection, storage, management, and analysis interfaces for Google's logs.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the long-term technical and product strategy, balancing innovation with the stability and reliability required for a system of this scale and criticality.
  • Lead a significant multi-year program to evolve core architecture, APIs, and deployment models to leverage standard Google infrastructure and practices more fully.
  • Staff, develop, and grow talent through hiring, mentoring, development, and coaching. Continue to balance staffing and work across geographies to maximize impact for investment.
  • Partner with Site Reliability Engineering and other infrastructure teams to ensure the highest levels of reliability, efficiency, and performance.
  • Drive improvements in system architecture, data governance, policy compliance, and user experience.
