Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience developing or launching products or technologies within artificial intelligence or Machine Learning (AI or ML).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Knowledge of Cloud or AI (builder, code and design savvy).
  • Ability to be comfortable with ambiguity, and possess a proactive, entrepreneurial spirit to drive new initiatives forward.
  • Ability to collaborate with Principal, Software Engineers, Team Leads and Director-level engineering leaders.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent people management and communication skills.

Within OCTO, the Applied Innovation Factory (AIF) is an entrepreneurial incubation program spurring Cloud and AI innovation through collaborative experimentation.

We partner with engineering teams and key customers to build technology that pushes real-world boundaries, turning early proof points into scaled products. Successes include bringing generative AI to drive-throughs, improving Cloud Code assist, and illustrating climate change risks using geospatial technologies.

As the Senior Engineering Manager for OCTO Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), you will build and lead a team of Software Engineers exploring transformative market opportunities. You will collaborate with OCTO’s leaders, Google Product/Engineering teams, and strategic customers to create the future of Google, focusing on high-impact growth. You will bring an entrepreneurial (0 to 1) spirit, taking loosely formed ideas into actionable insights and concrete outputs. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000-$349,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead OCTO's AIF Americas pod (~10) collaborates with OCTO's Technical Leaders and other cross functional partners.
  • Leverage your deep technical expertise to help identify and refine promising projects across a rich variety of highly complex AI problems.
  • Bring your entrepreneurial spirit and passion for addressing ambiguous and ambitious projects in a scrappy 0 to 1 environment, driving focus on speed to learnings and prioritizing rapid experimentation.
  • Collaborate to define and continuously refine concrete experiments, proactively identify and unblock the team when necessary and contribute directly in the project execution.
  • Navigate complex organizational challenges working across products and engineering in Google Cloud, Google DeepMind and other Google teams. Build a collaborative and effective team coaching and mentoring the team on experimental thinking, challenging their assumptions, structuring communication for successful transitions and career development.
