The Microsoft Word Applied Science team in Redmond, WA, US builds state-of-the-art, large-scale natural language understanding and generation models that power AI writing experiences for millions of users. As an Applied Scientist II in the team, you will collaborate with experienced applied scientists, researchers, engineers, designers and product managers to build and deliver high-quality competitive products that enhance the writing experience across multiple platforms and domains. You will also conduct cutting-edge applied research leading to high product impact and publish your work in top-tier conferences and journals. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in collaborative relationships with relevant product and business groups inside or outside of Microsoft and provides expertise or technology to create business impact.
  • Collaborates with and bridges the gap between researchers and engineers. Brings new technology and approaches into production by applying long-term research efforts to solve immediate product needs.
  • Stays updated with the latest research and trends in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and related fields and explore new ideas and opportunities for innovation.
  • With light guidance, own scoped problems and deliver research-backed, data‑driven, scalable solutions.
  • Researches and develops an understanding of tools, technologies, and methods being used in the community that can be utilized to improve product quality, performance, or efficiency.
  • Understands and follows ethics and privacy policies when executing research processes and/or collecting data/information.
