The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers looking to leverage the latest technologies to address their toughest challenges.  

 

We work closely with our customers’ engineers to jointly develop code for cloud-based solutions that can accelerate their organization. We work in collaboration with Microsoft product teams, partners, and open-source communities to empower our customers to do more with the cloud. We develop solutions side-by-side with our customers through collaborative innovation to solve their challenges. This work involves the development of broadly applicable, high-impact solution patterns and open-source software assets that contribute to the Microsoft platform.  

 

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will have experience and expertise in designing and delivering solutions using modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies. You will be part of a cross-functional team of software engineers, data scientists, technical program managers, and designers who work side-by-side with high-impact and strategic customers and their engineers to build innovative solutions.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with Agentic Frameworks
Other Requirements
  • Microsoft is unable to sponsor a work visa for this role due to the nature of the role's job duties.
Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Enjoy travel and are comfortable with travel up to 25% 

  

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

User-Centered Design & Requirements Gathering

  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to define user requirements across a variety of scenarios, ensuring solutions are aligned with business needs.

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Leads the identification of technical dependencies and authors comprehensive design documentation for products, applications, services, or platforms.
  • Sets the standard for high-quality, extensible, and maintainable code, mentoring peers and fostering engineering excellence across teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Planning

  • Applies deep subject-matter expertise to guide cross-product feature development, partnering with stakeholders such as project managers to align project plans, release schedules, and workstreams.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

  • Serves as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentoring engineers across solutions and ensuring system reliability through on-call support and proactive monitoring.
  • Continuously explores emerging technologies and patterns to enhance product availability, performance, and observability at scale, while promoting best practices in monitoring and operations.
