About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The Spatial Flex organization builds Google-wide services and resource capacity management that is trustworthy and efficient. Our team is responsible for managing one of the planet's largest computing fleets, where the fundamental challenge is balancing immense demand for resources with rock-solid reliability and maximum efficiency.

Our solution is to engineer a fully autonomous, intelligent fleet driven by measurable service-level objectives, creating a self-regulating infrastructure based on data-driven decisions. This involves creating universal tools to hide the complexity of physical infrastructure, using advanced risk modeling to safely maximize fleet utilization, and building an end-to-end system that connects long-term planning directly to real-time execution.

As we deliver on this outlook, we also lay the groundwork for the next frontier: a truly agentic fleet management system.

Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Architect the future of resource management by taking a leading role in designing and implementing a holistic and self-healing resource distribution ecosystem.
  • Solve foundational systems problems at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, risk modeling, and policy enforcement. This includes designing high-level resource abstractions that operate above the level of a single data center, enabling strong governance of resource entitlements, and creating a tiered, automated system for maintaining fleet health.
  • Author proposals for foundational investments and define strategies for the broader organization, looking beyond the current roadmap to solve fleet-wide gaps in governance, risk mitigation, and service modeling.
  • Collaborate with and influence partner teams across product areas to define requirements, establish consensus among divergent teams, and deliver a unified platform.
  • Help develop other engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, strategic thinking, and innovation.
