Overview

The Cloud Consoles team at Microsoft is seeking a Software Engineer to help design, build, and operate distributed systems that power mission-critical services such as Serial Console, Cloud Shell, and future cloud infrastructure initiatives. This role offers hands-on experience with real-world distributed systems at scale, making it ideal for engineers who are eager to deepen their technical expertise and contribute to foundational cloud services.


In your first 60 days, you will ramp up on the team’s architecture, tooling, and processes while contributing to bug fixes and small improvements. By 120 days, you will own the development of a backend feature or service, collaborating with senior engineers and stakeholders. Within six months, you will help deliver a new capability for Serial Console, Cloud Shell, or a new initiative, and participate in your first on-call rotation. By the end of your first year, you will manage multiple workstreams, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and consistently deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, Rust, C#, Go, Java, or Python,
    • OR equivalent experience. 
  • Academic and/or professional experience with cloud infrastructure, including:

    • Networking and security fundamentals.

    • Containerization technologies (e.g. Docker and/or Kubernetes).
    • Cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, and/or GCP).

Other Requirements: 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, Go, Java, or Python,
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, Go, Java, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience. 

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $84,200 - $165,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $109,000 - $180,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains backend services and infrastructure for Serial Console, Cloud Shell, and new cloud platform features.
  • Designs scalable, reliable, and secure distributed systems that support millions of sessions and users.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including product, User Experience (UX), and operations, to deliver robust solutions.
  • Participates in architecture & code reviews and contributes to technical decision-making.
  • Troubleshoots, optimizes, and improves system performance, reliability, and security.
  • Engages in on-call rotations and incident response to ensure high availability of services.
  • Continuously learns and applies new technologies, patterns, and best practices in cloud engineering.
