Overview

The Azure Hyperscale Networking Team is growing and we’re looking for a Senior Cloud Network Engineer with computer networking experience to help design, test, deploy and operate our WAN backbone network. We seek engineers who share our passion and can approach problems from a customer’s perspective, creating user experiences that genuinely enable and empower our partners. 

  

Focusing on the global backbone network, and working closely with partner teams in Azure Networking, you’ll be a critical part designing and developing automation and large-scale services that drive our network to autonomy. This will include owning components from design through to deployment and operations for our existing network, and for the new infrastructure needed to support Cloud & AI traffic loads. This is a high visibility position in an area of large and expanding investment for Microsoft Azure and offers a terrific opportunity for technical and career growth.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) experience delivering network designs into production and experience with live site accountability for a network 
  • 3+ years of network engineering experience in an online services, internet service provider, cloud provider or large enterprise environment - delivering network designs into production and experience with live site accountability for a network 
  • CCNP/JNCIP/CCIE certifications 
  • 1+ years experience with traffic engineering solutions such as RSVP-TE, Segment Routing 

Other Requirements: 

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 8+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) experience delivering network designs into production and experience with live site accountability for a network
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience in the networking domain, including Python, YAML, and workflow systems 
  • 5+ years experience with routing protocols such as: ISIS, BGP, and MPLS technologies 
  • 2+ years of network engineering experience in an online services, internet service provider, cloud provider or large enterprise environment 
  • 1+ year experience developing programs using Python, or other programing languages 
  • 4+ years experience with routing protocols such as: ISIS, BGP, and MPLS technologies 

Cloud Network Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and high‑performance network solutions for WAN and backbone infrastructure. Develop innovative solutions and prototype them in lab environments before production rollout.  Document designs, processes, and operational playbooks  
  • Design and onboard next generation routing platforms into production environments. Validate new devices, firmware, and configurations using automated test frameworks.  
  • Build and maintain automation frameworks for network configuration, deployment, and monitoring. Implement telemetry and observability solutions for proactive issue detection.  
  • Resolve live site issues by troubleshooting complex network components and features under time‑sensitive conditions. Lead critical customer‑facing troubleshooting efforts and drive root‑cause analysis for major incidents.
