Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in an organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • Experience with distributed system design, encompassing proper architecture across clients and various server layers, and with machine learning systems, data analysis, and using data to drive technical and product decisions.
  • Experience as a Tech Lead for a large-scale, consumer-facing product.

The YouTube Watch team is looking for a experienced Staff Software Engineer to step into a critical Tech Lead role. This is a high-leverage, high-visibility role at the very heart of YouTube. In this role, you will own the technical goal and architecture for the high-performance backend systems that power every YouTube Watch Page you see.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive the evolution of our server architecture, ensuring it can scale for the next billion users translating ambitious product goals from our partner teams into scalable system and infrastructure capabilities, thereby improving their developer velocity.
  • Uphold and elevate our engineering standards, guaranteeing our critical services meet exceptional performance and efficiency.
  • Lead our machine learning efforts to personalize the Watch experience, from optimizing UI placement to developing new models that create a more intelligent and engaging journey for every viewer.
  • Serve as the key technical partner for Product, UX, SRE, client and feature engineering teams.
  • Grow the technical expertise of the team by mentoring engineers, guiding designs, and fostering a culture of innovation.
