Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Electrical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience in mechanical test engineering for consumer hardware.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership or management role.
  • Experience with test fixture design, assembly, development, system bring-up, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools such as SolidWorks.
  • Experience with factory automation, ongoing system monitoring, and predictive maintenance.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with mechanical tests such as force testing, water leak tests, and durability/life cycle testing.
  • Knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) principles and a track record of providing effective feedback on product design.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and people skills.
  • Strong background in high-volume consumer electronics manufacturing, particularly with smartphones or similar devices.
  • Expertise in mechanical design principles, fixture design, and manufacturing processes.

As a Mechanical Test Engineering Manager, you will lead a multi-disciplinary group within the Global Operations organization working on factory testing and automation for Google’s consumer hardware products. In this role, you will guide your team in developing, implementing, and optimizing mechanical manufacturing test fixtures and processes. You will review product designs for manufacturability, provide valuable feedback to product design teams, and drive the development of innovative test solutions for features like water resistance, button functionality, and etc. You will provide solutions to engineering problems, including fixture design, automation, operation, and troubleshooting of factory test systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $171,000-$254,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of mechanical and manufacturing test engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the development, design, and validation of mechanical manufacturing test fixtures and equipment.
  • Collaborate with product design, product quality, and operations teams to review new product designs, identify potential manufacturing challenges, and provide feedback to improve manufacturability.
  • Drive the development of new mechanical tests and test methods to address product design changes and evolve quality requirements.
  • Manage project schedules, resources, and budgets to ensure on-time delivery of test solutions.
