Principal Engineering Manager

As a Principal Engineering Manager in the WEX (Web Experiences) team, you will lead and inspire a high-performing group of engineers to accelerate the value of AI for Intranet owners. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, where you’ll drive fast iteration, experimentation, and learning, delivering innovative, resilient, and scalable solutions that shape the future of employee engagement and productivity.

Required Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.
• 4+ years of hands-on experience in architecting and building scalable systems capable of handling millions of requests per day.
• 3+ years of experience leveraging strategic communication and stakeholder engagement to align teams, influence decisions, and achieve business objectives.

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science OR related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, OR Python
  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.
• 6+ years people management experience.
• Deep understanding of AI/ML concepts and practical experience applying AI to real-world product scenarios highly preferred.
• Track record of rapid iteration, experimentation, and continuous learning.

Software Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $163,000 - $296,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of ~10 full stack engineers, driving technical vision and execution for SharePoint AI Intranet experiences.
• Set direction and provide hands-on guidance in architecture, design, and delivery of AI-powered features at massive scale.
• Champion fast iteration, experimentation, and data-driven decision making to accelerate learning and impact.
• Collaborate with product, design, and partner teams to define and deliver high-value solutions for Intranet owners.
• Foster an inclusive, growth-oriented team culture focused on innovation, technical excellence, and customer empathy.
• Stay at the frontier of AI (LLMs, multimodal, retrieval, agents) and the competitive landscape; synthesize insights into data-backed recommendations that improve quality, latency, safety, and cost.
• Make pragmatic model/infra choices (model selection, RAG vs. fine-tuning/LoRA, caching/batching, distillation) to balance quality, latency, and cost at SharePoint scale.
