Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in engineering management.
  • Experience with distributed systems architecture.
  • Experience managing teams and working with cross-functional and cross-product area partners.
  • Experience with paid or marketplace-oriented products.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience building and running eCommerce platforms.
  • Experience building and optimizing AI and Machine Learning systems.
  • Experience with social or user-generated content experiences.
  • Deep understanding of international nuances in the retail ecosystem and experience building products that scale globally but can meet local needs.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to operate with flexibility in a fast-paced, constantly evolving and collaborative environment.
  • Passion for and thought leadership within retail or ecommerce.

About the job

As the Senior Director of Engineering for Shopping on YouTube, you'll lead a fast-growing engineering team of ~200 to drive technical evolution across YouTube. You will establish tech team norms within engineering and elevate the engineering culture through cross-team initiatives. You will be a key partner to executives in YouTube, establishing ground truth in a complex technical landscape and help shape opinions and directions of YouTube Shopping. You will use your strong consumer and merchant engineering acumen to transform and grow the Shopping on a property that attracts over 2 billion users each month.

YouTube plays an increasingly important role in how consumers discover and research brands and products, with viewers watching 30 billion hours of shopping related videos on YouTube each year. The richness of video and the trust viewers place in their creators has the potential to transform how brands and retailers connect with customers.

You will lead YouTube’s efforts to seize this massive opportunity to improve all stages of the shopping journey on YouTube. You will define and deliver YouTube’s shopping experiences across our three-sided marketplace. You will drive and execute on the engineering roadmap for the consumer-, creator- and merchant-facing YouTube Shopping experience (and underlying platform capabilities) and deliver high-quality and impactful launches through close partnership with product and design.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $349,000-$485,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Shape the technical direction for YouTube Shopping. Elevate Engineering Culture within YouTube Shopping.
  • Drive exponential growth with a rapidly-evolving technology and business model. 
  • Build and execute an engineering roadmap for YouTube’s shopping offerings. Communicate and advocate best practices to partners to support the strategic priorities of YouTube Shopping.
  • Re-imagine how video and YouTube can be used to connect consumers with products they love. Advocate for YouTube’s shopping offerings internally and externally. 
  • Grow, lead and inspire a team of engineers, while also driving collaboration and partnership with cross-functional partners (e.g., product management, design, business development, etc.) as well as cross-product area partners.
