Overview

Azure Core Infrastructure Efficiency team is central to making Azure the most efficient cloud platform. We work closely with the Azure Core System Research Group to find improvements in power, cooling, and space usage continuously driving efficiency to support Azure’s tremendous growth.


As a member of our team, you will be working with power control systems, live telemetry streams, and large datasets to run analyses and make decisions on dynamic data center power control. You will work closely with other teams on AI-driven prediction modeling for power and cooling analysis and optimizing infrastructure for GPU-intensive workloads.

You will work closely with experienced engineers to contribute to the safety and efficiency of servers, including GPUs power AI workloads, in our datacenters, while improving your technical skills and understanding of large-scale systems. Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, Java, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience independently leading software development projects.
  • 2+ years of experience working across multiple teams to develop control systems.

Other Requirements: 

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
    • OR related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, OR Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in C# and experience with large-scale distributed systems.
  • Proficient debugging and troubleshooting skills in production environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, telemetry, or power systems is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and have a growth mindset

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure software solutions that optimize datacenter power and cooling efficiency.
  • Analyze large-scale telemetry and operational datasets to identify trends, detect anomalies, and drive data-informed decisions for dynamic power control.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, research, and infrastructure engineering groups, to develop predictive models and control systems.
  • Lead technical discussions and contribute to architectural decisions that impact multiple components or services. Develop and maintain technical documentation, design specifications, and operational procedures for owned systems.
  • Participate in and help improve the team’s on-call rotation, ensuring high availability and rapid incident response for live services.
  • Drive engineering excellence by promoting optimal practices in code quality, testing, observability, and operational readiness. Mentor and support the growth of early-career engineers through code reviews, design guidance, and knowledge sharing. Ensure compliance with Microsoft’s standards for security, privacy, accessibility, and sustainability in all engineering work.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements across the Azure infrastructure stack. Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and internal tools to continuously improve system performance and team productivity.
