DESCRIPTION

The Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager will have an extensive background in leading teams in the development of space based and ground based mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. The ideal candidate has experience managing teams delivering these complex systems from from concept design, through qualification, and then on to production. This is a hands-on role for a highly collaborative individual that combines leadership with superb technical skills allowing them to lead the engineering team in a meeting cross discipline requirements.

The candidate will have a sharp focus on the specific needs of the customer and be able to direct the team in finding innovative solutions that will meet our customer’s goals. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience leading successful teams on on complex programs with a diverse set of talented individuals.


Key job responsibilities
* Lead a diverse team of mechanical designers and analysts on projects that can vary from space based payloads and structures, to airborne electronics and antennas, to ground based mechanism, electronics and support equipment
* Establish and enforce technical standards, guidelines, and checklists to ensure the appropriate balance between rigor and execution velocity
* Apply extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering to mentor and guide the team in developing these systems while balancing requirements with reliability, SWAP, and complexity
* Chair design reviews, risk assessments, and problem resolution throughout the product development lifecycle
* Be an expert in one or more areas of mechanical design or analysis, thermal design or analysis, structural dynamics.
* Hire and develop requisite talent to ensure the team can meet KGS's goals and deliver for customer needs .Scoping, managing, resourcing, and delivering multiple technical projects in parallel from concept to production
* Developing and reporting performance metrics for the mechanical engineering team to peers and executives
* Interfacing with engineering managers, product management, and/or program management to drive new product development programs from concept to production
* Support project and resource planning for individual projects and the engineering organization


Security Clearance: This position requires that the candidate selected be a US Citizen and candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance of TS/SCI.


About the team
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and under-served communities around the world.

The Kuiper Government Engineering team is a multi-disciplinary technology team involved in developing and delivering targeted and scalable solutions for custom satellite and ground applications. The KGS Engineering team works closely with the core Kuiper team, and addresses the needs of specific customers (such as government agencies). The Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager will play a critical role in the team delivering innovative and fast-paced hardware solutions for our customer needs.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

BS in Mechanical Engineering
5+ years managing hardware engineering teams
8+ years as a lead mechanical engineer (design, structural, thermal, or dynamics)
Expert in at least one mechanical engineering discipline (Design/Structural/Thermal) and well versed in the other disciplines
Demonstrated expertise in spacecraft structures or electronics packaging applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering
10+ years managing large hardware engineering teams
10+ years as a lead mechanical engineer (design, structural, thermal, dynamics)
Expert in multiple mechanical engineering discipline (Design/Structural/Thermal/dynamics) and well versed in the other disciplines

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $161,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $279,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
