The Role:
Hardware safety compliance engineers are responsible for ensuring the company's products meet all relevant safety standards and regulations. They serve as the primary gatekeeper for product safety, conducting thorough reviews to identify and mitigate potential risks. This role is integrated into the product development lifecycle, with the engineers collaborating cross-functionally and utilizing their expertise in safety standards. They perform risk assessments, establish testing protocols, manage certification processes, and interface with regulatory bodies. Beyond compliance, the engineer proactively shapes the safety landscape, setting new industry standards and fostering a strong culture of safety within the organization. This role is a trusted partner and subject matter expert, playing a pivotal role in enabling the company's innovation while prioritizing the safety of its products.
Key job responsibilities
- Drive a standardized and harmonized approach to Safety Compliance across Amazon’s suite of products
- Be a technical leader able to utilize deep knowledge and experience to support junior compliance engineers and design teams on safety compliance issues and failures
- Determine the applicable regulations, standards, and safety requirements for new and existing products.
- Communicate technical safety and compliance requirements to design teams, operations, and contract manufacturers.
- Participate in electrical and mechanical system design reviews to ensure that safety mitigations are properly implemented.
- Engage with senior Amazon leaders to represent compliance-related topics.
- Direct compliance testing and certification at external labs.
- Review compliance evaluations for accuracy.
- Contribute to international expansion and certification strategies.
- Oversee all aspects of hardware compliance for a device when required.
- Stay abreast of industry activities by participating in standards development committees or other industry organizations relevant to Lab126.
A day in the life
A typical day in this role involves working with cross-functional and outside partners on regulatory compliance initiatives, connecting with our product development team to drive key aspects of product definition, compliance requirement, testing execution and deep diving safety and other compliance issues. You must be responsive, flexible and able to succeed within an openly collaborative peer environment.
About the team
You will be part of the Hardware Compliance Engineering team responsible to enable compliance, safety and international approval of Lab126, Ring and other devices. We do this by leveraging our global diverse foundation of subject matter expert, experienced global market access program managers, robust processes and mechanisms. - Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or similar technical discipline
- 5+ years of experience in hardware development or compliance
- Experience handling product compliance, submitting products for global approvals, and obtaining certifications
- Experience with the application of U.S. and international product safety standards (e.g. UL, IEC, EN, ANSI, CSA, ISO)
- Knowledge of electronics and mechanical design and safety
- Experience working with third-party labs & Asia-based contract mfrs. and test labs
- Experience communicating technical topics to interdisciplinary audiences
- Experience reviewing a design's construction for compliance.
- Knowledge and experience conducting safety compliance tests for US and international standards.
- Master’s or PhD degree in a relevant field.
- 6+ years of experience in hardware development or compliance
- Experience performing the safety compliance assessment of devices in various categories (e.g. construction review, test plan creation, test execution, certification)
- Experience handling consumer electronics compliance
- Experience evaluating the compliance of power supplies, direct-plug-ins, wearables, lasers, lighting powers, or toys
- Experience handling product certification for global markets (e.g. CE, UL, CSA, PSE, NOM, BIS, METI)
- Experience conducting product risk assessments or failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Experience with failure analysis
- Experience responding to regulator audits
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
