The Austin Passive Safety Test team is responsible for executing, analyzing, and reporting on various tests within required program timelines, primarily focusing on vehicle engineering development, regulatory certification, and consumer protection crash testing in a team- based environment. Team consists of Test Engineers and Engineering Technicians, specializing in Vehicle & Mechanical, Instrumentation & ATD (Anthropomorphic Test Devices, or crash test dummies), Fabrication, and Imaging.
Prepare test vehicles to match desired test configurations according to written and oral requests and procedures, while ensuring a high level of quality and repeatability
Install data acquisition equipment, including sensors such as accelerometers, gyros, strain gauges, load cells, pressure transducers, and current sensors
Installation/removal of vehicle test fixtures, lab equipment, and ballast weights, as specified in the test request
Maintain sensor library, sensor repair, and coordinate calibration activities of all instrumentation
Design and create custom brackets, wire harnesses and fixtures
Setup and deploy high-speed (Phantom) and other cameras, lighting and lenses for test setups including selecting appropriate imaging devices for use in various test environments
Help maintain and repair all test equipment, ensuring good working order
Maintain a professional, clean, and organized laboratory environment
Prepare vehicle components and coupons for flammability testing
Prepare and repair test vehicles for different driving and durability tests
Wide variety of experience diagnosing, repairing, and replacing components on passenger vehicles. Tesla vehicle experience preferred, but not required
Ability to operate a wide variety of hand/power tools and shop equipment, for servicing vehicles and lab equipment. Fabrication and/or machine shop skills preferred
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in tight spaces inside test vehicles
Work outdoors in the temperatures Austin sees year-round
Ability to use computers effectively for diagnosis, communication, reporting (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Tesla-specific diagnostics tools)
Valid driver's license required
Ability to operate and use diagnostic scan tools, scopes, meters, and other test equipment
Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines
