What to Expect

The Energy Projects team is a cross-functional organization responsible for sales, engineering, and project execution of solar and storage projects. The team includes Engineering expertise from project development, design, power systems analysis, project & construction management, and commissioning. This team sits at the center of business development, Tesla technology, and the deployment of solar and storage projects. As a member of our team, you will help to shape the success of our projects in various applications across the Americas. You must have a genuine passion for enabling and executing projects that will fundamentally change the world’s energy infrastructure and must want to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. The Estimator will be a key technical member of a pre-contract cross-functional team that focuses on evaluating, defining, and implementing strategies to develop stationary storage, solar, and microgrid opportunities deploying Tesla’s technology in a variety of applications and markets. You will be responsible for creating bottom-up Engineering, Procurement, and Construction estimates, thorough vetting and benchmarking of third-party quotes, identification of scope gaps and cost saving opportunities. You will also serve as a subject matter expert in a focused team, providing detailed data and analysis to drive team achievement of cost reduction goals. You will work closely with members of the Tesla’s Product Management, Sales & Development Engineering, Project Management and Procurement groups.  

 

This is a diverse role where knowledge of basic design rules, constructability, permitting, utility requirements, and engineering fundamentals for utility scale and smaller complex projects is expected. This position will be full-time onsite and can be based out of either our Austin, TX or Palo Alto, CA office.

What You’ll Do
  • Create estimates and firm bids for utility scale Battery Energy Storage System EPC projects including labor, materials, equipment, permitting, engineering and project management costs
  • Create and maintain cost estimating tools and databases, reviewing and incorporating historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc. into unit and man-hour figures
  • Compile and compare estimates, bids, and running budgets across multiple projects and generate recurring reports for executive review
  • Collaborate and drive value-engineering with engineering, sales, operations, procurement, and sub-contractor teams
  • Coordinate closely with Project Development Managers and Sales Engineers to provide estimating support in the creation of comprehensive proposals for customers
  • Interface with internal customers (project managers, product engineers, sales team) and external customers (utilities, AHJs, contractors, end customers) to ensure consistent communication
  • Prepare takeoffs and work with project team to solicit and secure competitive sub-contractor proposals and pricing
  • Assist in writing work scopes and reviewing contract change order and field change order proposals
  • Participate in the design, pre-construction, construction, and post-mortem processes
  • Write proposals and provide input on design changes and value engineering
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of electrical estimating experience, including 2 years utility estimating experience
  • Experience with High Voltage/Medium Voltage Substations
  • Excellent skills in Excel, proficient user of other MS office applications, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Google Earth Pro
  • Advanced data analysis skills
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, and able to manage shifting priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and execute many projects and tasks in parallel
  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment
